Bizarre Foods – Puerto Rico
This is my site Written by Cumba on June 8, 2009 – 7:04 pm

Two of my favorite programs on the Travel Channel are Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods. I may not always enjoy what they eat but I appreciate the glimpses into local cultures through the country’s cuisine. On June 9th, Bizarre Foods goes to Puerto Rico and from the previews, Andrew goes to one of my favorite places to eat, Guavate.

While I may not consider most of the food “bizarre,” I am sure that someone from some other culture may. I look forward to seeing the island and it’s people get some recognition for what I consider some of the best food in the world. Of course, I am biased as anyone would be for their native country’s food.

Below are two clips from the show. One is the promo and the other is an extended scene from the show. Looking forward to seeing the whole show.

  1. Eso! Well. I love(d) morcilla… used to have it when visiting in Bolivia. Now, after seeing how they make it… well…

But what a feast on the table, eh? Recently, a Puerto Rican restaurant has opened here in whitesville (my corner of NJ) and my gringo husband has been (for the past few fridays) bringing home yucca, pernil, arroz con habichuelas, maduros, and MOFONGO! He says, pizza on fridays just doesn’t do it anymore…

  2. I just finished watching the episode and I have so many emotions about it. I love Guavate, the town dedicated to pork. It is such a tradition to go there on the weekends. Morcillas are one of the “bizarre” foods that I love. Mofongo, pernil and all root vegetables are what I grew up on when I was a child.
Still digesting the episode but I plan to write a review. So much to share.
