In creating this blog, my main interest is exploring history that has been overlooked or lost. While looking for material I came across this article by Sonia M. Rosa in Kacike (Journal of Caribbean Amerindian History and Anthropology).
The very well-researched and written article relates the story of “Porto Rican” children sent to be Americanized after the Spanish-American War. The school they were sent to was the Carlisle Indian School, created to civilize the children of the Native American elite. Reading about this reminds me of a film I recently saw Rabbit-Proof Fence about the same treatment of the Aborigines in Australia.
For the full article go to The Puerto Ricans at Carlisle Indian School.
That reminds me of another, similiar sad story “The Education of Little Tree” – book and movie. Thanks for the article.
It is a sad story, it’s amazing that these things were happening in the 20th century. I did not read that book but the movie “Rabbit Proof Fence” showed a similar story. That happened in the 1930s until I believe the 1960′s in Australia.
