The Puerto Ricans at Carlisle Indian School

In creating this blog, my main interest is exploring history that has been overlooked or lost. While looking for material I came across this article by Sonia M. Rosa in Kacike (Journal of Caribbean Amerindian History and Anthropology).

The very well-researched and written article relates the story of “Porto Rican” children sent to be Americanized after the Spanish-American War. The school they were sent to was the Carlisle Indian School, created to civilize the children of the Native American elite. Reading about this reminds me of a film I recently saw Rabbit-Proof Fence about the same treatment of the Aborigines in Australia.

  1. That reminds me of another, similiar sad story “The Education of Little Tree” – book and movie. Thanks for the article.

  2. It is a sad story, it’s amazing that these things were happening in the 20th century. I did not read that book but the movie “Rabbit Proof Fence” showed a similar story. That happened in the 1930s until I believe the 1960′s in Australia.
